African City
In collaboration with The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū, this limited-edition scarf honours African City, a landmark painting by modernist pioneer John Weeks. The original painting has been thoughtfully brought to silk, preserving the rhythmic geometry and North African influences that define Weeks’ composition.
Featuring a refined palette of ochre, navy, and sandstone tones, African City speaks in architectural lines and layered abstraction. Delicately captured from the original artwork and transferred onto silk, the scarf offers a compelling balance between heritage and movement—inviting art collectors and style devotees alike to wear a fragment of Aotearoa’s artistic legacy.
The Artist
A formative figure in New Zealand’s early modernist movement, John Weeks brought a distinctly international lens to local abstraction. After studies in Paris under the tutelage of André Lhote, and extensive travels across Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, Weeks wove Cubist structure with sunlit texture.
His career as an artist and educator at Elam School of Fine Arts helped shape generations of creatives—yet it’s his enduring compositions, marked by their harmonic use of form and colour, that continue to resonate. African City, created in the late 1920s, remains a cornerstone of this legacy.
An Architectural Rhythm in Silk
In close collaboration with The Suter Art Gallery, this limited-edition piece honours John Weeks’ original composition—transposed onto silk with care and sensitivity. Geometric contours ripple softly across the surface, echoing the architectural cadence and layered abstraction of African City.
Each scarf is a wearable expression of New Zealand’s modernist heritage—crafted from the finest mulberry silk, finished with hand-rolled edges, and imbued with a painterly palette that shifts gently with movement. As light touches its folds, the geometry hums, offering a quiet yet evocative homage to Weeks’ vision.
