Which Side of a Silk Pillowcase Do You Sleep On?

Either side — with a genuine silk pillowcase, both faces are the same smooth silk, so you can sleep on whichever one is facing up. There's no special "right" side for your skin or hair. The only thing worth a glance is the closure: keep the envelope flap or the zip at the side or bottom of the pillow, away from your face, and you'll be lying on the large, seamless silk face all night. That's really all there is to it — but here's the small bit of nuance behind the question.
Which side of a silk pillowcase do you sleep on?
Whichever side you like. A real 100% mulberry silk pillowcase is woven from the same silk through and through, so the front and back are identical in feel — both equally smooth, cool and gentle on skin and hair. Unlike some fabrics where one face is "the good side", silk gives you the same surface wherever your cheek lands. So you don't need to hunt for a particular side or worry you're sleeping on the wrong one; just lie down on the broad, flat face and enjoy it.
Why it doesn't matter with real silk (but can with fakes)
The question usually comes from experience with cheaper bedding. A polyester "satin" case can be shiny and slippery on one side and noticeably rougher on the other, so with those there genuinely is a better side. Real silk doesn't have that problem — it's smooth on both faces because it's silk all the way through, not a coating on a backing. So if you ever do notice one side of a "silk" pillowcase feeling different from the other, that's a quiet clue it might not be the real thing; our guide to telling real silk from fake covers the rest of the tells.
The one thing to check: the closure
The only practical consideration is where the opening sits. Whether your pillowcase has an envelope flap or a zip, position it at the side or bottom edge, away from where your face rests, so you're always sleeping on the smooth, uninterrupted silk rather than over a seam or fastening. With an envelope closure, that also tucks the flap neatly out of the way.
A small tip: rotate it now and then
Since both sides are equally good, it's worth flipping and rotating the pillowcase occasionally — it spreads the wear evenly so no single area thins or dulls before the rest, helping the case last longer. Wash it about once a week while you're at it, and a good silk pillowcase will stay smooth on every side for years.
Our LS Silk NZ mulberry silk pillowcases are 22-momme, 100% mulberry silk and OEKO-TEX certified — the same lovely surface on both sides, so the only decision you have to make is which way to lie.
So don't overthink it: with real silk, there's no wrong side. Settle the closure out of the way, rest your cheek on the smooth silk face, and let the pillowcase do the rest.
