Why Silk Doesn't Last Forever (and How to Make Yours Last Decades)

A historic robe, a museum's careful lighting, and what conservators know about keeping silk alive.

In a climate-controlled room, under lights kept deliberately low, a conservator lifts a two-hundred-year-old silk robe with gloved hands. The humidity around it is held steady to the percentage point. It will never hang in a sunny window again, and it will never be washed.

Silk does not last forever, because silk is a protein. That is the whole answer in a sentence. The very thing that makes it feel alive against your skin, that fine filament spun by an animal rather than grown on a plant, is also what gives way in the end to light, warmth and damp. But the museum is only half the story. Treated gently, a good silk pillowcase will serve you for years, and silks in collections have survived for centuries. Almost all of the difference is in the keeping.

What silk actually is

Silk arrives in the world as a single continuous thread, wound by the silkworm into a cocoon you could hold in a closed hand. Two proteins make it. Fibroin is the strong inner filament, and sericin is the gummy amber coat around it, washed away in warm water to leave the softness the fibre is famous for. Fibroin is built from amino acids, mostly glycine, alanine and serine, folded into a tight, semi-crystalline stack. That folding is why a thread finer than a human hair can be stronger, weight for weight, than steel.

It also means silk has more in common with your hair than with a cotton sheet. Cotton is cellulose, a plant fibre, and it behaves like one. Silk is closer to us. So it answers to the world the way protein does. It reacts to sunlight. It does not love heat. It holds onto moisture.

One number is worth knowing. Momme is the old measure of how densely a silk is woven, and a higher momme weight, like the 22-momme we use, means a heavier, closer cloth with real body to it. Hold it against the thin, papery silk of a fast-fashion scarf and you can feel the difference before you know the word for it.

Why does silk break down?

Three things do most of the damage, and light leads the list.

Silk is among the most light-sensitive fibres there is. When ultraviolet light lands on it, high-energy photons snap the peptide bonds holding fibroin together. Worse, the reaction throws off free radicals that go on to break more bonds, so the damage feeds itself. Researchers writing in npj Heritage Science describe silk as especially prone to this photo-oxidation, which is precisely why museums light silk so dimly and screen out every last trace of UV. A sunny windowsill is not a kindness.

Heat and humidity are the quieter culprits. The Canadian Conservation Institute names warmth and damp as the pair that ages textiles fastest, because moisture and heat together break long protein chains into shorter, more brittle ones. Silk that has gone stiff and papery, that cracks along a fold instead of draping over it, has usually been shut away somewhere warm and airless for too long. In an Auckland winter, with the heat pump running and condensation on the windows, that is worth a thought.

The third is plain oxidation over time, hurried along by body oils, sweat and city air. It is why old silk drifts towards the colour of weak tea, and why that yellowing can be gently reversed if you catch it early enough.

What is “shattered silk”?

Here is where care advice turns into a cautionary tale.

In the late 1800s, silk was sold by weight. So manufacturers weighted it, steeping the fibre in metallic salts, most often tin, sometimes iron, until thin silk hung heavy and rich in the hand for a fraction of the cost. In the shop it was a triumph. In the wardrobe it was a slow disaster. Those salts keep working at the fibre from the inside for decades, until the cloth splits along every fold and crumbles into ribbons at a touch. Conservators call it shattered silk, and it is one of the saddest problems in the field. The Rijksmuseum and English Heritage both hold garments that are, in effect, dissolving in slow motion behind glass. There is no cure. The most a conservator can do is lay a sheer silk mesh over the wreckage and stitch it down by hand, using no glue at all, so that everything she has done can one day be undone.

The reassuring footnote is that this is an antique problem. Honest modern silk is not weighted. When you learn to tell real silk from a convincing imitation, what you are really asking is whether it is pure, and pure mulberry silk carries no such hidden fault line. It is one of the quiet reasons good silk costs what it does.

What this means for the silk you own

Your pillowcase, your scarf, the silk robe you reach for on a slow morning, are made of the same protein as the pieces behind museum glass. The same rules govern them. The happy difference is that nobody is lighting yours for twelve hours a day, or asking it to survive until 2226.

So the translation into ordinary life is short. Keep it out of direct sun. Keep it away from high heat. Never put it away damp. Do those three things and you have removed very nearly every real threat to your silk's life.

How to make your silk last: a simple checklist

  1. Wash kind. Hand wash or a gentle cycle, cool water, a pH-neutral or dedicated silk detergent, and a mesh bag for protection. This is most of the job. Our full guide lives here: what silk really wants on wash day.
  2. Dry out of the sun. Lay it flat or hang it in the shade, never in a hot dryer, never on a sunny line. Sunlight is the fastest way to fade and weaken silk.
  3. Store cool, dark and dry. Somewhere that breathes, away from light, bone dry before it goes away. In damper months air it now and then, and keep the moths out.
  4. Choose density. A closer, higher-momme silk simply lasts longer under nightly friction.
  5. Rotate. Two pillowcases used in turn will outlast one worked every night, and there is always a fresh one waiting.

None of it is fussy. It is the difference between silk that frays inside a year and silk you are still reaching for in ten.
